About Prohibition Blunder
Barb and Charlie Asher
ProhibitionBlunder.org is the latest project of the Freedom 22 Foundation, the private charity of Charlie and Barb Asher. Utilizing their backgrounds in law and social work, the couple focuses on developing targeted responses to large challenges in the field of law. Other projects have included the following:
-
UpToParents.org, a novel resource for separated, divorced, and never-married parents to focus on their children’s needs as their best light forward.
-
FamilyCourtWebsite.org, a model website for courts hearing family cases.
-
AssessFamilyLaw.org, a tool for making family law systems comprehensively more responsive to the needs of children and families.
-
DefenseMap.com, an intake tool massively expanding what defense attorneys can learn about their clients, encourage in their self-improvement, and advocate in their cases.
-
PrisonReview.org, a resource for considering improvements to prisons on over 150 standards.
Three concerns drove the Ashers’ decision to launch ProhibitionBlunder.org:
-
For decades the evidence has conclusively shown that economists like Drs. Milton Friedman, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and many others have been correct that Drug Prohibition would always be a doomed policy supporting cartels, causing millions of deaths, and spreading violence, discrimination, and social decay.
-
“The U.S. government’s policy of drug prohibition, like alcohol prohibition before it, is a failure—and not one that can be corrected by a mere tweaking of current policy.” —Dr. Benjamin Powell, Economist
-
“The failure [of the War on Drugs] has a simple reason: Governments continue to treat the drug problem as a battle to be fought, not a market to be tamed.” —Tom Wainwright, The Economist
-
“Drug raids are good politics, but they don’t make a dent in the drug problem.” —Dr. Thomas Sowell, Economist
-
“Can you conceive of any other measure that would accomplish so much to promote law and order as the legalization of drugs?” —Dr. Milton Friedman, Nobel Laureate in Economics
-
-
Despite the clarity of the evidence vindicating the economists’ warnings, neither of America’s major political parties has even examined the issue of Drug Prohibition’s evils.
-
These circumstances call for a grass-roots campaign to generate interest in the repeal of Drug Prohibition and its replacement with effective regulation through legalization.
“For decades we naively expected America’s policymakers to face the plain facts of the deadliness of the War on Drugs. Unfortunately, the political payoff of supporting this doomed policy has repeatedly turned out to be just too great. ProhibitionBlunder.org is our family’s attempt to help rally caring voices against this immoral pretense.”
